Snake looks simple. It is simple. But surviving for a long time — really long — requires a mindset shift that most casual players never make. Here are ten techniques that will change the way you play.
1. Think in Corridors
Instead of chasing food directly, learn to think in terms of safe corridors. Where can you travel without cutting off your escape routes? Always have a mental picture of where your tail will be in 5–10 moves.
2. Hug the Walls Early
When the snake is short, hugging the perimeter of the grid is one of the safest strategies. It keeps the centre open and gives you maximum room to manoeuvre.
3. Don't Chase Food Greedily
Sometimes the food is in a dangerous position. Circling wide to approach it safely is always better than cutting across the grid and trapping yourself.
4. Master the U-Turn
A controlled U-turn — going to the end of the grid and turning back — is the fundamental survival technique. Practice making clean U-turns in both directions without thinking.
5. Use the Spiral Technique
Advanced players spiral inward toward the food in a calculated path. This keeps the grid tidy and avoids the random crossings that kill most players.
6. Watch Your Tail, Not Your Head
Beginners watch where their head is going. Experts track where the tail is going. The tail is what frees up space — knowing when a section of grid opens up is crucial.
7. Plan 3 Moves Ahead
You don't need to plan the entire route. Just three moves ahead is enough to avoid most deaths. Make a decision, then immediately plan the next three moves.
8. Don't Fear Empty Space
Empty grid space is your greatest asset. Don't fill it prematurely. A common mistake is crisscrossing the grid when food is in a corner — be patient and go the long way around.
9. Accept That You Will Die
Counterintuitively, relaxing your death-fear improves your play. Tense, panicked movements cause most deaths. Breathe. Make deliberate choices. The snake moves the same speed whether you panic or not.
10. Learn From Every Death
After each game over, spend two seconds reviewing what happened. Did you cut off a corridor? Did you chase food greedily into a corner? Pattern recognition across deaths is how you improve faster than anyone.
